US Medical Supplies Announces Winner of the 2010 Scholarship

Raleigh, NC – August 20, 2010 – US Medical Supplies, an online retailer of mobility products such as power wheelchairs and mobility scooters, is proud to announce the first ever winner of their Medical Professionals of Tomorrow Scholarship.  After reviewing over a thousand entries, their scholarship award committee has selected Cameron Waites, a student at the University of Michigan at Flint who is studying Health Sciences in his pursuit to be a physician-scientist.

“Finding the perfect applicant was tougher than I had originally expected,” said David Ward, a member of the scholarship award committee.  “We had so many good applicants to choose from, but as soon as I made the call to Cameron, I knew that we had picked the right person.”

Cameron Waites, 2010 Scholarship Winner

Cameron Waites is a student at the University of Michigan at Flint where he is studying Health Sciences. His award-winning essay describes his time as an Army medic while deployed in Iraq and how he became inspired to learn more about neurological and autoimmune afflictions. Cameron is from Mount Morris, MI and plans to pursue a career as a physician-scientist. His primary interest is research. Cameron wants to do more than treat conditions such as traumatic brain injury and inflammatory syndromes; he wants to broaden our understanding of these conditions as well. US Medical Supplies is proud to award him our first annual Medical Professionals of Tomorrow scholarship award.

Applicants were asked to compose an essay of 500 words or more describing a person or persons who had inspired them to enter the medical profession.  The applicants were charged with describing the impact these individuals have had on their lives and the lessons they learned from them.

Mr. Waites’ essay highlighted his experience as an Army medic in Iraq and the friendships he made during his tour in the country.  These friendships brought Cameron to a realization that his own interest in medicine, mirrored in his friends, could be used to advance the treatment of diseases and disorders.  “During those conversations with my Iraqi friends, I would teach them what I knew about health and medicine, to which they would always respond with the question 'Why?'”

“In part, their lines of questioning reminded me of the natural curiosity I’d always had,” Waites wrote in his essay. “Importantly, I wish to pursue an M.D., Ph.D. degree because I wish to not only learn the science of medicine but also how to advance the cause in order to bring greater care and innovation to those who need it.”

August 2010 marks the first time that US Medical Supplies  has awarded the Medical Professionals of Tomorrow Scholarship.  The scholarship awards $1,000 to a full-time college student who is pursuing a career in the medical field.  The scholarship contest will be held again next year, and a new recipient will be chosen in the fall of 2011.
